MD 13 is a part of Samson's graphite midi controller series. Marketed as ‘On the go midi editor’ MD13 is compact and offers the basic functionalities of a midi controller. It is also equipped with a DJ styled crossfader. The controller is USB powered which means it doesn’t require an external power supply. It is also compatible with iPad and iPhone which makes it an ideal choice for entry-level musicians.
Functionalities:
1. Knobs: There are 6 knobs and the controller can store up to 5 presets for the which means you get a total of 30 Knobs across all the presets. The knobs are made of plastic and can withstand normal use.
2. Pads: There are 13 Chromatically arranged velocity-sensitive pads meaning they are arranged in the layout of your keyboard notes, I found these pads stiff and there is a problem of retriggering. Not a fan of these pads because they are glitchy but I don’t mind it because I use the controller along with another MIDI keyboard.
Octave Buttons can be used to stretch the pads up and down to use the whole range of a piano.
Crossfader and the Master encoder work as intended.
There is also a stop and a play button that can be mapped to your DAWs transport control.
Presets can be edited via the graphite mini editor application.
Pros:
Compact
Good for triggering loops via Mainstage or Ableton Live.
Affordable.
Customizable Presets.
Cons:
Retriggering of pads is annoying.
The preset editor software is difficult to understand, no tutorials available. I had to figure it out myself.
No pitch Bend or Mod wheel.
Verdict:
Okay controller if you can get it at a discount as I did. Does what it's designed to do.
